SoCal punk outfit Schleprock formed when the Bay Area scene was at its finest. Vocalist Doug Caine and guitarist Jeff Graham formed the group in 1989, and within a year Ernie Berru (drums) and Sean Romin (guitarist) completed the lineup. Several 7″ singles, such as “Do It All” and “Long Time Ago,” were issued on Nemesis in 1991 and the band rollicked right on through countless gigs across North America. At the helm of grunge, Schleprock released Propeller on Dr. Strange in 1994 and continued to build a name for themselves. Bass player Dean Wilson was added to the lineup in 1995 as Schleprock’s heavy punk snarl was getting bigger. Warner Bros. took notice and signed the band in 1996. (America’s) Dirty Little Secret, which appeared before the year’s end, kept with Schleprock’s nasty punk rawness. Long Time Ago followed on Cool Guy in 1997. The band effectively broke up that same year, and Caine and Berru formed the revivalist punk outfit Generators in LA. In 2005 Schleprock’s original lineup reunited for a few gigs to support the unreleased and rarities set Learning to Fall.

The Cars are an American rock band that emerged from the early New Wave music scene in the late 1970s. The band consisted of lead singer and rhythm guitarist Ric Ocasek, lead singer and bassist Benjamin Orr, guitarist Elliot Easton, keyboardist Greg Hawkes and drummer David Robinson. The band originated from Boston, Massachusetts, and were signed to Elektra Records in 1977.[1]

The Cars were at the forefront in merging 1970s guitar-oriented rock with the new synth-oriented pop that was then becoming popular and which would flower in the early 1980s. The Cars started fresh with their debut album The Cars which went on to go platinum in late 1978, The Cars debut album was called a “genuine rock masterpiece” by allmusic. Probably the most successful and well known song from the album “Just What I Needed”, started as a demo in 1977. The song was sent as a mix tape to a local DJ in the Boston area, who played the song in heavy rotation. This soon caught the attention of other DJ’s, which led to the signing of the band by Elektra Records in 1977. The Cars have mentioned this numerous times including in their “last” interview in June 2000. Robert Palmer, music critic for The New York Times and Rolling Stone, described The Cars’ musical style by saying: “they have taken some important but disparate contemporary trends—punk minimalism, the labyrinthine synthesizer and guitar textures of art rock, the ’50s rockabilly revival and the melodious terseness of power pop—and mixed them into a personal and appealing blend.”

Reston, Virginia is one of the earliest planned communities in the United States. It’s located about twenty miles south of Washington and the kids that lived there would regularly come into DC for gigs. However, the bands that formed out there did not get much notice in town, and this situation created a bit of a satellite scene. By the early 1990s Branch Manager had already made a name for themselves within this scene and were beginning to create an impact in DC as well. Those who saw them swore by them, and a cult-following developed. After releasing two singles on local labels (one on VHF Records, and the other on Level Records) Branch Manager eventually caught the attention of the folks at Dischord and released two albums on the label in 1995 and 1997. During these years Branch Manager toured extensively, including a number of dates with Fugazi, and it was after a particularly grueling trip in 1997 that the band cracked up and disappeared from sight.

New Order were an English musical group formed in 1980 by Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitars, synthesizers), Peter Hook (bass, backing vocals, electronic drums) and Stephen Morris (drums, electronic drums, synthesizers). New Order was formed by the remaining members ofJoy Division following the suicide of vocalist Ian Curtis. They were soon joined by keyboard player Gillian Gilbert.

New Order combined post-punk and electronic dance, and became one of the most critically acclaimed and highly influential bands of the 1980s. Though New Order’s early years were shadowed by the legacy of Joy Division, their immersion, with help from Morris D. Temple, in the New York City club scene of the early 1980s increased their knowledge of dance music. The band’s 1983 hit “Blue Monday” saw them fully embrace dance music, synthesizers and drum machines, and is the best-selling 12-inch single of all time. New Order were the flagship band for Factory Records, and their minimalist album sleeves and non-image reflected the label’s aesthetic of doing whatever the relevant parties wanted to do, including an aversion to including singles as album tracks. The band has often been acclaimed by fans, critics and other musicians as a highly influential force in the alternative rock, dance and rave music scenes.
