Starts Fires In Your Pants (Reptilian Records)
Review By: Jeb Branin

This album may have what is the best album title of the year! Gotta love that. The music is even almost as good. If you have missed the decline in the quality of noise rock since the whole AmRep scene went cold, fret no more. M.B.S. may single handedly resurrect the sound. They take the classic AmRep routine and then add to it a seemingly incongruent mixture of infectious hooks and complex metallic hardcore. And is it noisy? You gotta be kidding me! Is *NSYC horrible beyond description? OF COURSE IT IS NOISY. Distortion is an instrument here folks. And I swear to you that I hear a vacuum cleaner being used to flesh out the sound in the same way a lot of bands use keyboards. All this and it is still one of the catchiest noise rock albums I have ever heard. The third track “With A Fine Tooth Comb-over” could be a radio hit. I kid you not. Track seven “Hump Bounce (I Like The Crotch On You II)” – another great title – has these blues inspired hard rock riffs that are so unforgettable pop metal bands the planet over would kill to have them.

Pg. 99 (also spelled pageninetynine) was a screamo band from Sterling, Virginia on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The band formed as a 6-piece in winter 1998 and later expanded to an 8-piece. With continual line-up changes, they once played as a 14 member outfit. Pg. 99 were known for their intense live shows.

In Connecticut, Pg. 99 attendees spawned a number of “theme shows” where audience members descended on the pit adorned with items of the evenings theme.

After several US tours, a European tour, and numerous releases, they disbanded in May 2003. As of 2009, two releases are yet to see light – a DVD compiling various live footage, and a split 10″ with City of Caterpillar containing both bands’ last songs recorded.

AS$TROLAND – Sweep The Leg (Exit) Not all fast, grind-type bands lack a sense of humor. Asstroland take the hate on everyone from straight-edg-ers to self-appointed “moral police” to uptight PC types—it must take cojones to sing a pro-vivisection song (al-though I’m sure it’s satirical) at ABC-No-Rio . Fun, enter-taining silliness, with the underlying message to not takeyourself too seriously, and doing so with a dead-on,thrash-buzz attack

Double Dagger are a post-punk trio from Baltimore, Maryland composed of only drums, vocals, and a very loud bass guitar which fills the space a guitar would normally take. Vocalist Nolen Strals and bassist Bruce Willen also comprise the graphic design team Post Typography, which has done work for some very high profile clients, including the New York Times.  Hence, Double Dagger made a habit of referring to their style of post-hardcore as “graphicdesigncore” early in their career.

Rocket from the Crypt was an American rock band led by John Reis, formed in 1990 in San Diego, California and disbanded in 2005. Of Reis’ many musical endeavors, Rocket from the Crypt were the most successful and most internationally recognized.

The band gained critical praise and the attention of major record labels after the release of their 1992 album Circa: Now!, leading to a recording contract with Interscope Records. They experienced a surge of popularity with the release of the albums Scream, Dracula, Scream! (1995) and RFTC (1998), accompanied by numerous vinyl singles and EPs released on independent labels. However, album sales were not as high as expected and Interscope soon turned their attention to higher-grossing acts. The band left the label, and shortly thereafter drummer Atom Willard departed the group.

After a period of inactivity in 1999 and 2000, during which Reis formed Hot Snakes and Sultans and launched his Swami Records label, the band signed to Vagrant Records and recruited new drummer Ruby Mars. They experienced a revitalization of creative energy and released two more albums, but were not as prolific as in the past. Over the next few years the band members drifted into other projects and Rocket from the Crypt became less the focus. They decided to disband in 2005, playing a sold-out farewell show on Halloween in their hometown of San Diego.
