Henry Owings began publishing Chunklet in Athens, GA while freelancing for alternative newsweekly Flagpole Magazine. “The main reason the mag started was due to my dissatisfaction with how my writing was handled in the Flaghole,” Owings says, although he has intimated that Chunklet is a sanctuary for self-hating critics.

Since 1993, Chunklet has published 20 issues on no particular schedule. The first 19 of these are out-of-print. The magazine includes this disclaimer on Chunklet.com: “Chunklet comes out with little regard to a set schedule only because the contributors are busy with their other activities such as being in bands, work, family, putting out records, habitual laziness, television, our lord and savior Jesus Christ and internet porn.”

Estrogen Highs from Conneticut have just enough of what’s usually missing from a straight forward rock’n roll band these days. With nothing more than a peculiar name and an affiliation with the Sudden Walks as reference points, Estrogen Highs have delivered a simplistic and direct stab at primitive rock’n roll that continues to seep in and take hold long after the record stops. Not too far off from the oddly familiar Tyvek debut in it’s inability to be pigeonholed, Estrogen Highs take that same ‘less is more’ aesthetic and keep it honest and catchy as an alternative to adding on to an already tired schtick, and they effortlessly let the music hammer out their blurry message.

The Clash were an English rock band that formed in 1976 as part of the original wave of British punk rock. Along with punk rock, they experimented with reggae, ska, dub, funk, rap and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, The Clash consisted of Joe Strummer (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mick Jones (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Simonon (bass, backing vocals, occasional lead vocals) and Nicky “Topper” Headon (drums, percussion). Headon left the group in 1982, and internal friction led to Jones’s departure the following year. The group continued with new members, but finally disbanded in early 1986.

The Clash were a major success in the UK from the release of their debut album, The Clash, in 1977. Their third album, London Calling, released in the UK in December 1979, brought them popularity in the United States when it came out there the following month. It received wide critical acclaim; a decade later Rolling Stone magazine declared it the best album of the 1980s.

The Clash’s politicised lyrics, musical experimentation, and rebellious attitude had a far-reaching influence on rock, alternative rock in particular. They became widely referred to as “The Only Band That Matters”, originally a promotional slogan introduced by the group’s record label, CBS. In January 2003 the band—including original drummer Terry Chimes—were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked The Clash number 30 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

SCHLEPROCK Something Like That Spring and Ten Speed 7” colored vinyl EP DR. Strange Records lot

SCHLEPROCK Something Like That Spring and Ten Speed 7” colored vinyl EP DR. Strange Records lot
CONDITION: Great condition! Vinyl and sleeve look very nice! NM

US $8.99

SoCal punk outfit Schleprock formed when the Bay Area scene was at its finest. Vocalist Doug Caine and guitarist Jeff Graham formed the group in 1989, and within a year Ernie Berru (drums) and Sean Romin (guitarist) completed the lineup. Several 7″ singles, such as “Do It All” and “Long Time Ago,” were issued on Nemesis in 1991 and the band rollicked right on through countless gigs across North America. At the helm of grunge, Schleprock released Propeller on Dr. Strange in 1994 and continued to build a name for themselves. Bass player Dean Wilson was added to the lineup in 1995 as Schleprock’s heavy punk snarl was getting bigger. Warner Bros. took notice and signed the band in 1996. (America’s) Dirty Little Secret, which appeared before the year’s end, kept with Schleprock’s nasty punk rawness. Long Time Ago followed on Cool Guy in 1997. The band effectively broke up that same year, and Caine and Berru formed the revivalist punk outfit Generators in LA. In 2005 Schleprock’s original lineup reunited for a few gigs to support the unreleased and rarities set Learning to Fall.

Alice Donut “Nadine / The Chicken Door / Empty Streets” 7″ Vinyl Record on Alternative Tentacles

Alice Donut “Nadine / The Chicken Door / Empty Streets” 7″ Vinyl Record on Alternative Tentacles
CONDITION: Good condition with light surface wear on sleeve and vinyl.

US $4.99

Alice Donut is a rock and roll band from New York City. Formed in 1986, disbanded in 1996, and re-formed in 2001, the band toured vigorously and broke up after their 1000th live performance. Between 1987 and 1996, Alice Donut released seven full-length albums and around 15 EPs, singles, and other releases on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label and various other labels.

2004’s Three Sisters, their first release after their hiatus, was recorded as a four-piece with Tom Antona on vocals, Michael Jung on guitar, Stephen Moses on drums and Sissi Schulmeister on bass. Guitarist Dave Giffen rejoined the group for Fuzz, which was recorded in Brooklyn’s BC Studio with longtime co-producer Martin Bisi and released on September 05, 2006.

The band’s style and lyrics are eclectic. Their music is a mixture of hard rock, punk, and post-punk and typically features melodic, guitar-heavy, odd-metered, and rhythm based pieces and is often punctuated with brass instrumentation. Many of the members are traditionally- or classically-trained musicians, though rarely on the same instruments they play in the band.

Alice Donut’s lyrics take on what they view as the perversities, odd details, and petty humiliations of life. Their lyrical subject matter focuses on topics including depravity, domestic violence, and sexuality, reflected in songs like “My Life is a Mediocre Piece of Shit” and “The Son Of A Disgruntled X-Postal Worker Reflects On His Life While Getting Stoned In The Parking Lot Of A Winn Dixie Listening To Metallica”.
