Starts Fires In Your Pants (Reptilian Records)
Review By: Jeb Branin

This album may have what is the best album title of the year! Gotta love that. The music is even almost as good. If you have missed the decline in the quality of noise rock since the whole AmRep scene went cold, fret no more. M.B.S. may single handedly resurrect the sound. They take the classic AmRep routine and then add to it a seemingly incongruent mixture of infectious hooks and complex metallic hardcore. And is it noisy? You gotta be kidding me! Is *NSYC horrible beyond description? OF COURSE IT IS NOISY. Distortion is an instrument here folks. And I swear to you that I hear a vacuum cleaner being used to flesh out the sound in the same way a lot of bands use keyboards. All this and it is still one of the catchiest noise rock albums I have ever heard. The third track “With A Fine Tooth Comb-over” could be a radio hit. I kid you not. Track seven “Hump Bounce (I Like The Crotch On You II)” – another great title – has these blues inspired hard rock riffs that are so unforgettable pop metal bands the planet over would kill to have them.

Alice Donut “Nadine / The Chicken Door / Empty Streets” 7″ Vinyl Record on Alternative Tentacles

Alice Donut “Nadine / The Chicken Door / Empty Streets” 7″ Vinyl Record on Alternative Tentacles
CONDITION: Good condition with light surface wear on sleeve and vinyl.

US $4.99

Alice Donut is a rock and roll band from New York City. Formed in 1986, disbanded in 1996, and re-formed in 2001, the band toured vigorously and broke up after their 1000th live performance. Between 1987 and 1996, Alice Donut released seven full-length albums and around 15 EPs, singles, and other releases on Jello Biafra’s Alternative Tentacles label and various other labels.

2004’s Three Sisters, their first release after their hiatus, was recorded as a four-piece with Tom Antona on vocals, Michael Jung on guitar, Stephen Moses on drums and Sissi Schulmeister on bass. Guitarist Dave Giffen rejoined the group for Fuzz, which was recorded in Brooklyn’s BC Studio with longtime co-producer Martin Bisi and released on September 05, 2006.

The band’s style and lyrics are eclectic. Their music is a mixture of hard rock, punk, and post-punk and typically features melodic, guitar-heavy, odd-metered, and rhythm based pieces and is often punctuated with brass instrumentation. Many of the members are traditionally- or classically-trained musicians, though rarely on the same instruments they play in the band.

Alice Donut’s lyrics take on what they view as the perversities, odd details, and petty humiliations of life. Their lyrical subject matter focuses on topics including depravity, domestic violence, and sexuality, reflected in songs like “My Life is a Mediocre Piece of Shit” and “The Son Of A Disgruntled X-Postal Worker Reflects On His Life While Getting Stoned In The Parking Lot Of A Winn Dixie Listening To Metallica”.

The Jesus Lizard is an alternative rock band formed in 1987 in Chicago, Illinois. After the breakup of the band’s first incarnation, Scratch Acid, singer David Yow relocated from Texas to Chicago and teamed up with former Cargo Cult guitarist Duane Denison. Finding his abilities on bass guitar lacking, David Yow recruited ex-Scratch Acid bandmember David Wm. Sims for a new project. The band used a drum machine for their earliest recordings and performances before adding drummer Mac McNeilly after recording their first EP Pure.

Skin Yard was a grunge band from Seattle, Washington, who were active from 1985 to 1992. The group never gained any mainstream audience, but were an influence on their contemporaries – most notably Soundgarden, The Melvins, and Green River – alongside whom they are considered the early pioneers of the sound that would later be called grunge.

C/Z Records is a Seattle-based record label that was established in early 1985 by Chris Hanzsek and Tina Casale with the release of the now-legendary, Deep Six LP, which collected the earliest recordings of the real pro-genitors of what later came to be known as grunge.

The label’s first release (September 1, 1985) was titled Deep Six (CZ001). This was a compilation LP that featured early grunge bands Soundgarden, The Melvins, Green River, Skin Yard, Malfunkshun, and The U-Men. Nationally, the record was something of a disappointment, and after about 18 months, Chris & Tina realized that running a record label was not a career they wanted to pursue.

Daniel House, bass player for Skin Yard, was in the midst of putting together the bands first record, and took over the operation of C/Z records. For several years C/Z was little more than a hobby, but quickly became an outlet for many unnoticed Seattle bands that House felt were making great music. In 1989 House began working as director of sales for a new Seattle independent record label by the name of Sub Pop. Eventually he left as C/Z became successful in its own right. He subsequently released early albums and singles by notable bands like The Presidents of the United States of America, The Melvins, Built to Spill, 7 Year Bitch, The Gits, Silkworm and Hammerbox.

In 1993, C/Z entered into a production and distribution deal with Sony-owned RED Distribution. The deal quickly went sour and bled the label dry in less than a year. House was forced to downsize and re-organize, and it would be over a year before any new releases would see the light of day.

In 1996 the BMG-owned Zoo Entertainment parternered with C/Z. Zoo provided a modest operating and recording budget and assisted in the development of new artists. In 1997 Zoo was be purchased by Volcano Entertainment and all third party ventures were dropped.

Daniel House returned C/Z to part-time status, releasing only occasional records on an infrequent basis.

In 2002 C/Z released an odds-n-sods collection of unreleased and unavailable Skin Yard material, entitled Start at the Top.

C/Z released several Teriyaki Asthma compilations, one of which contained Nirvana’s “Mexican Seafood”. Nirvana also released their version of “Do You Love Me?” for C/Z’s Kiss tribute album.

WHITEHOUSE “Psychopathia Sexualis” 12″ LP Vinyl Record 1982 Come Organisation

WHITEHOUSE “Psychopathia Sexualis” 12″ LP Vinyl Record 1982 Come Organisation
CONDITION: Great condition. Light surface wear on sleeve. Vinyl looks unplayed VG++

US $36.51

Psychopathia Sexualis is the seventh album by Whitehouse released in 1982 by Come Organisation.

Psychopathia Sexualis returns to the theme of serial killers, the subject of most of the songs. Every song title bearing the name of serial killer opens with a spoken introduction, detailing the profile of the serial killer. The introductions are spoken in Spanish, except “Edward Paisnel” spoken in Catalan. While the songs continue to utilize the high pitched feedback known in most albums during the Come Organisation era, the album pursues a diverse sound. Example include, the tape manipulation of the introduction in “Edward Paisnel” and the pulsing beats in the opening track “Peter Kürten.” Note that the songs “Peter Kürten” and “Boston Strangler” (pseudonym for the serial killer Albert de Salvo) differ from the songs “Dedicated to Peter Kürten” and “Dedicated to Albert de Salvo – Sadist and Mass Slayer” found on their previous albums. “Live Action 4 (Complete)” is, as the title suggests, Whitehouse’s fourth live concert.
Psychopathia Sexualis was originally limited to 500 copies on vinyl on the group owned record label Come Organisation. Unlike most of their albums, Psychopathia Sexualis has not been reissued by Susan Lawly because the master tapes have been lost. Though possible to master from vinyl or cassette with the appropriate technology to remove the scratching and cracking sounds, the group worries that the content of the album would be altered given the already noisy nature of the music.

Track listing
