Gil Scott-Heron (born April 1, 1949) is an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1970s and early 1980s work as a spoken word performer and his collaborative soul works with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul. Scott-Heron’s recording work is often associated with black militant activism and has received much critical acclaim for one of his most well-known compositions “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. His poetic style has been influential upon every generation of hip hop since his popularity began.[1] Although he is widely considered a influence in today’s music he is still active with an album that came out in 2010 entitled I’m New Here as well as playing a large role in the 2010 Kanye West Platinum album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. In track 13, the final song of the album,”Comment #1″ track number 4 from side 1 of his 1969 album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox is played over a different beat and renamed as “Who Will Survive in America” which is a point stressed by Gil in his original poem.

The band formed in 1966 in San Diego and released their debut album Heavy in 1968 after signing a deal with ATCO, an Atlantic Records subsidiary. The original members were Doug Ingle (vocals, keyboards), Jack Pinney (drums), Greg Willis (bass), and Danny Weis (guitar). They were soon joined by singer/frontman Darryl DeLoach.

Jerry “The Bear” Penrod and Bruce Morris replaced Willis and Pinney after the band relocated to Los Angeles in 1966 and Ron Bushy then came aboard when Morris’ tenure proved to be a short one. All but Ingle and Bushy left the band after recording the first album in late 1967; the remaining musicians, faced with the possibility of the record not being released, quickly found replacements in bassist Lee Dorman and guitarist Erik Brann (aka Erik Braunn) and resumed touring.

Weis and Penrod went on to form the group Rhinoceros.

The 17-minute “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”, the title track of their second album, became a Top Thirty hit in the US and made the number 9 spot on the Dutch Top 40. (Doug Ingle is reported to have said the title was an alcohol-slurred version of “In the Garden of Eden”, although this may be apocryphal; see the song’s page.) The members when In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was recorded were Doug Ingle (keyboards and vocals), Lee Dorman (bass guitar), Ron Bushy (drums), and 17-year-old Erik Brann.

Ball is the third studio album by the rock band Iron Butterfly, released in February 1969. After the enormous success of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida”, Iron Butterfly modified its acid-rock sound somewhat and experimented with shorter, more melodic compositions. The band’s trademark heavy guitars, however, are still evident on such tracks as “In the Time of Our Lives” and “It Must Be Love.” The album reached number 3, making Ball more immediately successful than In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. Ball was certified Gold by 1969. In 1999, Collector’s Choice Music released Ball with two bonus tracks, I Can’t Help But Deceive You Little Girl and To Be Alone, which before this release, was only available on a 7 inch single format.

The Shirelles were an American girl group in the early 1960s, and the first to have a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. The members of the quartet were Shirley Owens (the main lead singer; later known as Shirley Alston, then Shirley Alston Reeves), Doris Coley (later known as Doris Coley Kenner, then Doris Kenner Jackson; she sang lead on “Dedicated to the One I Love”, “Welcome Home Baby”, “Blue Holiday” and a number of ‘b’ sides and album cuts), Beverly Lee, and Addie ‘Micki’ Harris. The quartet formed in New Jersey in 1958, and went on to release a string of hits including “Baby It’s You” (written by Burt Bacharach/Mack David/Barney Williams), “Mama Said”, “Foolish Little Girl”, and the #1 Pop hits “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” (Gerry Goffin/Carole King) and “Soldier Boy” (Florence Greenburg/Luther Dixon). Their “Sha La La” became an international hit when covered by the UK/British group Manfred Mann, giving them a Top 5 hit in 1965, and the song “Boys” was covered by The Beatles. The Beatles also covered “Baby It’s You” on their album “Please, Please Me” in 1963. A year later, this same Burt Bacharach/Mack David song was also a Top 30 hit in the UK for Sheffield-born singer Dave Berry.
