The Cult are an English rock band, formed in 1983. They gained a dedicated following in Britain in the mid 1980s as a post-punk and gothic rock band with singles such as “She Sells Sanctuary”, before breaking mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s as a hard rock band with singles such as “Love Removal Machine”. The band fuses a “heavy metal revivalist” sound with the “pseudo-mysticism … of The Doors, the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin, and the three-chord crunch of AC/DC, while adding touches of post-punk goth rock”. Since their earliest form in Bradford during 1981, the band has had various line-ups, and the longest serving members are vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, the band’s two songwriters.

After moving to London, the band released the album Love in 1985, which charted at #4 in the United Kingdom, and which included singles such as “She Sells Sanctuary” and “Rain”. In the late 1980s, the band dropped their post-punk sound in favour of hard rock with their third album, Electric, and their fourth album, Sonic Temple, which enabled them to break into the North American market. By the early 1990s, the band was fraying behind the scenes, due to alcohol abuse and off-stage tensions, leading to a split-up in 1995. The band reunited in 1999 and recorded the album Beyond Good and Evil, and they reissued all of their albums in Asia and Eastern Europe in 2003 and Japan in 2004. In 2006, the band reformed again to perform a series of worldwide tours. In October 2007, the band released the album Born into This, on the Roadrunner Records label. According to a July 2009 interview with Astbury, The Cult may never release any more studio albums

COMETS ON FIRE “Field Recordings From the Sun” 12″ LP Vinyl Record Bada Bing!!!

COMETS ON FIRE “Field Recordings From the Sun” 12″ LP Vinyl Record Bada Bing!!!
CONDITION: Great condition. Light surface wear on sleeve. Vinyl looks great! VG++ to NM

US $12.99

Field Recordings from the Sun starts off like the next drum circle over from the No-Neck Blues Band– congas, singing bowl, “heaven bells”, “camel bells”, and other contraptions rattle over the horizon like a VW bus full of chandeliers. But that’s just the intro: it suddenly drops off and you’re hit by a screeching, high-end rock assault. A pounding rhythm section bursts in, followed by bare-chested, doped-up rock-god vocals, and more than anything, guitars– lots of them, grinding, screeching, scratching, and wrung through effects and oscillation. And for the whole rest of the album, that’s all you get. But isn’t that enough?

The craziest astro-named band since Uranus & The Five Moons, Comets on Fire plays noise/psychedelic/space-rock. You’ll hear many familiar sounds and riffs, but the band jumbles them up and cranks them so high they sound fresh again; and they also have a kind of trademark in their excessive use of Echoplex, a delay and echo device that dates back to the early days of rock. It’s the main job of one guy, Noel Harmonson, just to work the Echoplex and oscillations through which the Comets run the guitars and the vocals. This makes a sound that’s not unlike being screamed at through a fifty-foot cardboard tube.

JEREMY STEIG “Legwork” 12″ LP Vinyl Solid State Records

JEREMY STEIG “Legwork” 12″ LP Vinyl Solid State Records
CONDITION: Good condition. Light surface wear on sleeve and vinyl. VG

US $27.00

Jeremy Steig, (September 23, 1942), the son of New Yorker cartoonist William Steig, is notable as one of the few jazzflutists playing flute exclusively, as opposed to doubling from other woodwinds.
At age 19 Steig was involved in a motorcycle accident which left him paralyzed on one side. For some years afterward, he played the flute with the help of a special mouthpiece.
After a start in mainstream jazz, with albums with Bill Evans and Denny Zeitlin, Steig became an early force in the jazz-rock fusion experiments of the late 1960s and early 70s, including the short lived band Jeremy and the Satyrs, featuringWarren Bernhardt, Eddie Gomez and Adrian Guillary. Steig’s album Energy, later re-released with additional material under different titles, featured keyboard player Jan Hammer and bassist Eddie Gomez, and was recorded at Electric Lady Studios under the hand of sometime Jimi Hendrix engineer Eddie Kramer. Additionally, Steig played flute on the seminalPeter Walker record “Rainy Day Raga”, providing an atmospheric color essential to the records fusion of Eastern Indian and Americana Folk traditions.
Steig addressed the tonal color restrictions of the instrument by the use of “modern” acoustic techniques (voice multiphonics and overtones similar to Rahsaan Roland Kirk, key percussion) electronic effects, and by using the entire battery of flute-family instruments, from piccolo to bass flute (including the obscure Sousa-era alto piccolo), often over-dubbed and multi-tracked together.
His song Howlin’ For Judy from his 1970 album “Legwork” is the source of the main sample in the 1994 Beastie Boys’ single “Sure Shot”.
Steig performs the role of “The Pied Piper,” exclusively on flute, in the film Shrek: Forever After, based on the character created by his father.

JUJU “A Message From Mozambique” 12″ LP Vinyl Record 1973 Black Fire Records

JUJU “A Message From Mozambique” 12″ LP Vinyl Record 1973 Black Fire Records (reissue?)
CONDITION: Great condition. Like new. VG++

US $4.99

The first album by the group that later went on to become Oneness Of Juju! The album was recorded with a group that featured Plunky Nakabinde and Lon Moshe on reeds and percussion – plus Babatunde on congas and drums – and the overall sound is very much in kind of an Art Ensemble Of Chicago mode – with more “out” soloing overall, mixed with some of the spiritual jazz leanings that would show up more on the group’s later work. The album’s a fitting record for the Strata East label – as it shows the imprint’s equal ability to carve up heavy avant work and more strident spiritual soul jazz. And if we say so ourselves, Plunky’s really a wailer on tenor and soprano – sounding a lot like Kalaparusha or some of the other AACM players from the time! Titles include “(Struggle) Home”, “Soledad Brothers”, “Freedom Fighter”, and “Nairobi/Chants”.-dustygroove.com

JUJU “Chapter Two: Nia” 12″ LP Vinyl Black Fire Records 1974 reissue

JUJU “Chapter Two: Nia” 12″ LP Vinyl Black Fire Records 1974 (reissue?)
CONDITION: Great condition. Like new. VG++

US $4.99

Wow! This is probably the rarest of the Juju/Oneness of Juju albums – and it’s also one of the best! Unlike their first album on Strata East, the group’s a little bit more inside, and doesn’t get lost in overindulgent avant garde solos. Instead, they groove hard with a deep warm sound, in strident tracks with a mix of percussion, vibes, piano, and the excellent reed playing of Plunky Nakabinde. The group does a great version of Pharoah Sanders’ “Black Unity”, plus originals like “Nia”, “Black Experience”, and “The End Of The Butterfly King”. -dustygroove.com

“This is one of those records that you really can’t believe whilst you’re listening to it; maybe someone spiked your drink? Or maybe you are actually dreaming, it doesn’t really exist? So you put it on again just to check, pinching yourself to make sure. Yep, here it comes again – insane guitar? Check, unhinged orchestra? Check, demented choir? Check. Haunted by the ghost of Gainsbourg this record is real, you really need it in your life.” JARVIS COCKER (PULP)
